In its attempt to reinforce and promote the rights of women in Africa, the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (The Commission) created the position of the Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Women in Africa in 1998. The first Special Rapporteur, Commissioner Julienne Ondziel Gnelenga, served from 1998-2001, when her term as member of the Commission came to an end.

In October 2001, Commissioner Angela Melo was appointed as Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Women in Africa.

This section provides information on the special mechanism for the protection and promotion of the Rights of Women in Africa as well as on the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, on the Rights of Women in Africa.(Protocol on the Rights of Women or Protocol).
