Press Statement on Letter of Appeal issued on the Human Rights Situation in the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia

On 02 February 2018, the Commissioner Rapporteur on the Human Rights Situation in the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, Commissioner Lawrence Mute, transmitted a Letter of Appeal to the President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia in response to reports of the use of force during the Ethiopian Orthodox church annual festival of Epiphany on 20 January 2018, where at least seven (7) Woldia town youth were reportedly shot and killed and fifteen (15) other people were injured.

The Letter of Appeal raised concerns on the reported use of force by security officials against civilians during the festival, and called on the Government to provide clarification on the reports, including measures taken to conduct investigations on the incident, ensure that those responsible were held to account, and to provide for an effective remedy and reparation for the victims or their families.

The African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights will remain actively seized of this matter.
