Press Release by the Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Expression and Access to Information in Africa on the situation of freedom of expression in the Republic of Mozambique

    On 22 March 2019, the Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Expression and Access to Information in Africa (the Special Rapporteur), Commissioner Lawrence Mute, transmitted a Letter of Appeal to H.E. the President of the Republic of Mozambique regarding reports of the arrest, prolonged detention and ill-treatment of Mr. Amade Abubacar, a journalist working for Rádio e Televevisao Comunitária Nacedje and Zitamar News in Mozambique.

    The African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights also took the opportunity to express condolences to the People and Government of the Republic of Mozambique following the devastation caused by Cyclone Idai.

    The African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights will remain actively seized of this matter.
